Cristopher Sánchez was on the ropes.

The Phillies’ young lefty had already allowed three runs by the third inning of Monday night’s game. He struggled with his command and had thrown 57 pitches. There were no outs, and the bases were loaded. Sánchez had just walked a run in and could not find the strike zone. No one would’ve blamed Rob Thomson if he elected to go out and get his starter right then, ending Sánchez’ night on a sour note.

But instead, Thomson and the Phillies allowed the young starter to try and pitch his own way out of the mess he created.
